The Football Federation of Belize maintains a National ‘A’ Selection of top Belizean players who have represented the nation abroad. The players are selected from across the country, and most of them are the best of the best in the Premier League. A new but critical initiative of the FFB has been to house all players in Belmopan prior to participation in tournaments. There they participate in daily training sessions, and also travel to select locations in the Mountain Pine Ridge and Placencia for specialized training in different environments.
For the first time ever, the Belize Jaguars made it to the third round of qualifiers for the prestigious World Cup, before falling to Canada on cumulative points. Still, the team managed to draw with Canada here at home before their many fans, proving that they possess the skills and the hearts of champions.
The plan is to keep the core national selection of veterans and young footballers together in training as the FFB prepares for the Central American Cup, the next big CONCACAF tournament. The top three teams coming out of that tournament will qualify for participation in the Gold Cup 2016.
